Windows 10 Update Fail Error Not Installing

Update failures in Windows 10 can manifest themselves in a variety of ways and at various stages of the update process. Typically, you’ll see something like this:

Your Windows Update was unsuccessful. But don’t be concerned. We can assist you.

We were unable to perform the changes. Changes are being undone. Don’t switch your PC off.

Configuring Windows updates failed. Changing things back. Don’t switch your PC off.

Unless you’ve changed your Windows 10 color settings, the notice shows on a blue screen in all of the above and other similar instances. The notice will also show after you have attempted an update, often many minutes or even hours later.

Reasons for windows update error

The following are the most typical reasons for a failed Windows 10 update:

  • Several upgrades are in the works
  • Insufficient storage space
  • Update files that are corrupt
  • Hardware clashes
  • Disputes between drivers

How to fix it? : windows 10 updates fail

Try each of the following remedies in order to repair your Windows 10 update problem and properly upgrade your operating system. You don’t have to try them all. If you successfully update Windows 10 after attempting a repair, you may safely disregard the next steps and resume using your freshly updated PC.

  • Restart windows update

Restart Windows Update to see if the problem persists. In many situations, merely restarting your computer and reinstalling the update will resolve the issue. It’s quite common for one of the updates in Windows 10 to fail during the first update process if there are many updates waiting. In such a scenario, restarting and re-starting the update procedure should generally fix the problem. You may need to repeat the update process if your Windows 10 installation is considerably out of date.

  • Unplug all devices

Unplug all of your devices and restart your computer. If reinstalling the update doesn’t solve the problem, you could have a hardware or driver issue. Before you reboot, try disconnecting all of your devices, such as cameras, microphones, and scanners. Run Windows Update once just the absolute minimum of a keyboard and mouse are connected.

  • Examine the disk space

Examine the amount of free space on your hard disc. A shortage of disc space is one of the most prevalent causes of failed Windows 10 upgrades. Although Windows 10 allocates space for updates, there’s always the possibility that you’ll run out of space if you have limited storage. Try deleting everything you don’t need, or even connecting an external disc, and then retry the upgrade.

  • Use troubleshooting tools

Use the troubleshooting tool in Windows 10. Windows 10 comes with a troubleshooter software that may assist with a variety of update issues. To see if the upgrade can be completed, run the troubleshooter.

To use the Windows 10 update troubleshooter, follow these steps:

  • Select troubleshoot settings from the taskbar search area after typing troubleshoot.
  • Select Windows Update from the drop-down menu.
  • Click Run the troubleshooter to see if there are any issues.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen.
  • Delete windows files

Delete your Windows Update files manually. In most cases, the previous procedure will remove your Windows Update files, including any possibly damaged or stuck downloads. If it doesn’t, you’ll have to manually remove the SoftwareDistribution directory.

Safe Mode should be used to restart your computer.

Navigate to C: Windows using File Explorer.

Locate the SoftwareDistribution folder and remove it.

Run Windows Update after restarting your machine.

  • Repair your Windows 10 installation

Your Windows 10 installation has to be fixed. It’s possible that the System File Checker won’t be able to resolve an issue with your Windows 10 installation. If you want to continue, you’ll need to reset or reinstall your computer while maintaining all of your files. It’s only one step away from a full Windows reinstall, so it’s a significant change.

Before you begin, make a backup of your files and settings, and be sure to select the Keep My Files option while completing the repair.

Non-Microsoft antivirus software can occasionally create upgrading issues, so use Windows Defender to safeguard your device throughout the upgrade. You may always reinstall the program after an upgrade as long as you have the installation disc and all needed activation details.

Microsoft Office Update fails – Solutions

If the Update option isn’t available or you can’t update, use Microsoft Update to install Office updates via Windows. Try fixing your Office suite if you want to upgrade Office but can’t access any of your Office apps.

Microsoft has issued a warning to Windows 10 customers, stating that recent upgrades have a number of problems. One of the vulnerabilities, according to reports, prohibits users from upgrading Office programs owing to a certificate loss issue.

When trying to install the newest Office updates after downloading the October 2020 Patch Tuesday patches, some Windows 10 users saw an error message that stated, “Download of Office 365 file failed, error =.” Because Microsoft has yet to release a fix for the issue, users will have to remove the flawed Windows update, update Office, and then reinstall the Windows patch.

Updates are not permitted

Unfortunately for Microsoft, the Office update error isn’t the only problem with its Windows updates that consumers have recently encountered. File Explorer problems and even the dreaded Blue Screen of Death have also been reported as a result of the October Windows 10 updates.

Microsoft has not responded to the reports of system crashes, but it has admitted that system and user certificates may be lost during the upgrade process.

According to a Microsoft support article, “this mainly occurs when managed devices are upgraded using outdated bundles or media using an update management tool such as Windows Server Update Services or Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager.” “This might also occur if you’re using old physical media or ISO images that don’t have the most recent upgrades installed.”

To decrease the chances of an issue arising, Microsoft advises that customers apply fixes for their operating system using the official Windows Update service rather than any other means.

How to fix it?

  • Ascertain that your computer is linked to the Internet.
  • You have a volume license install or your organization is utilizing Group Policy to handle Office updates if Update Options is absent and only the About button is there. Contact your company’s support desk or try Microsoft Update.
  • To manually download an update, go to Office Updates.
  • Try fixing your Office suite if you want to upgrade Office but can’t access any of your Office apps:
  • Uninstall a software by going to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
  • On your computer, locate and pick your Microsoft Office version. Change may be found in the bar above.
  • Select Quick Repair > Repair from the drop-down menu. If this does not work, repeat the instructions but this time select Online Repair.

How to fix it?

There are various methods to solve the “unlicensed” problem of Microsoft, but here we will discuss the “Resetting Office Activation” method.

This ‘Unlicensed Product’ issue turns out to be fairly prevalent among individuals who move devices often while using a single licensing subscription, as well as businesses that constantly add or change Office 365 tenants. The fact that some businesses choose to use roaming credentials to merely sign in might significantly exacerbate the situation.

If this is the case, you should be able to resolve the problem by deleting four separate places in order to reset the activation and reinstall Office in a fresh form.

The steps below involve using a ‘ospp.vbs:‘ script to check the license status and then uninstalling the keys associated with previous Office programs that may interfere with the validation process.

Follow the steps below to reset the entire Office activation:

  • Ensure that Outlook, Word, Excel, and any other Office-related programs are closed and that no associated background processes are active.
  • To open the Run dialogue box, press Windows key + R. To open an elevated Command Prompt window, type ‘cmd’ into the Run text box and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
  • Then allow admin access, select Yes when prompted by the UAC (User Account Control). To see which Office 365 license is presently in use, enter the following command into the elevated CMD window and press Enter:
  • Take note of the final 5 characters of the installed product key from the outputted license key since you’ll need them in the following step. To remove the Office Product key, enter the following command and hit Enter:
  • Keep in mind that the placeholder “Last 5 of installed product key” is just that. That portion must be replaced with the final four characters of the inserted product key (fetched at step 3).
  • By hitting the Windows key + R combination again, a new Run dialogue will appear. Then, to launch the Registry Editor, type ‘Regedit and click Enter.
  • Navigate to the following location in the Registry Editor, either by using the right-hand menu or by copying the address straight into the navigation bar and hitting Enter:
  • Right-click each subdirectory with the Identity key selected and select Delete to delete it.
  • You can safely close the Registry Editor once every Identity key has been removed.
  • To launch another Run command, use Windows key + R. To open the Credential Manager, type control.exe /name Microsoft.CredentialManager into the text box and click Enter.
  • When removing all credentials from the vault, restart your computer and reactivate your Office license from scratch after the next startup sequence is completed.
